She went up to do a header and at the same time a taller girl from the other team also tried to do a header. The other girl's forehead collided with the top of Lauren's head, you could hear a cracking sound when it happened and both girls went down. It didn't take long for Lauren to get up though so we thought she was alright and that the other girl got the worst of it.
This happened close to the end of the first half so she sat out the rest of it and then surprisingly started in the second half. I thought all was well with her or they wouldn't have put her back in. She did come out about halfway through and was out the rest of the game.
After the game was over her old coach told us to make sure to keep an eye on her because he didn't think she was acting right during the second half. At this point I wasn't worrying too much about it but as I watched her (we stayed to watch her boyfriend's game) I got increasingly worried. She was doing weird things like starting to tell her friends something then midway through forgetting what she was going to tell them. That didn't happen just once either, it happened quite a few times. Then another time she wanted to go inside to get dippin' dots so I gave her money and told her friends to keep an eye on her. They said she was wandering around aimlessly for a bit and when they asked her about it she didn't even know she was doing it. Then the kicker was when I left to go to the bathroom. I came back and her friend told me that Lauren (she was laying down) sat up and said something then laid back down. Her friend asked her what she said and Lauren had no memory of any of that happening. The girl can act air-headed at times but this was just too much.
I came home and told Paul all of this (he was there for her game but left afterwards) and we decided we should probably take her somewhere to get evaluated. We thought a walk-in first aid place would probably be faster than the emergency room so off she and I went to get her checked out. I think everyone in the area decided to visit that same clinic at the same time as us because we had quite a wait. Still probably better than going to the emergency room though. She finally got seen and it was determined based on her symptoms that she most likely has a moderate concussion. (There are 3 levels: mild, moderate and severe.)
She was still a little disoriented when we left there and went and got something to eat. I watched her wander aimlessly to get a lid for her soda after she filled it. It was just plain weird! She even admitted it was weird.
We got home and she laid on the couch and rested and drank fluids. When she went to bed she said her head still hurt but at least she wasn't nauseous or lightheaded. I figured I would blog about this then go up and check on her before going to bed myself. Poor girl, she's staying home with me tomorrow and I'm taking her to her doctor as a follow up. She's really bummed that she won't be able to play her high school soccer for awhile, we'll find out how long tomorrow.
Here's a few pictures from today:
This was taken a few minutes before her injury. I actually had my camera out when she got hurt but didn't have it focused on her because Zach distracted me or I might have had a picture of her banging heads. Not that I want a picture of that or anything but it did happen practically in front of us.

Not knowing she had a concussion she went and played in the second half. Heading yet another ball! At least this one was on her forehead.

At the awards ceremony after. Her team did not win, they got 2nd place medals. Notice Zach sitting in the bottom right corner? He was loving life sitting with the girls.
